The power of dignity to change the world

I love the opportunity to think deeply, consider and challenge my assumptions & meet great people.  This week courtesy of Jon Giacomi and team, I had the chance to do them all at UCSF. In the discussion that I facilitated, we talked about the status of women in the workplace, common myths, and then co-created the many ways that individually and collectively we create (or don't create) great workplaces.

The conversation included ideas such as ...

  • Seeking to know people

  • Be individually humble and reflection-oriented

  • Be curious

  • Listen

  • Support & encourage each other

  • Understand and honor the experiences of others

As I was considering key ideas and concepts, I also came across the quotes below by Seth Goldenberg and Donna Hicks, as their books made it to my reading list.  If we are truly going to change the world we are living in, we'll need to think about how we ground our interactions in dignity and consider how we challenge our mental models (aka the things we think we know are right).

These quotes came to mind for the discussion this week:

What if ….

  • More of us were willing to challenge our mental models and be prepared to unlearn?

  • What if more leaders & colleagues used their power to notice, acknowledge & appreciate those around them?

  • Who can you notice and appreciate today?
